How to Make a Small-Business Website Ready for People and AI

AI-generated image.

You usually do not need an AI chatbot or a complicated rebuild. Most “AI readiness” is good digital hygiene, not another plugin.

A useful website should be four things: clear, usable, understandable, and accurate. Improving those four areas makes the site easier for people to use and its information easier for search systems to read. Whether a particular AI product surfaces your pages depends on that product’s own controls and sources; no checklist can guarantee that outcome.

Clear

Answer the questions customers ask before contacting you: What do you do? Who do you help? Where do you work? How is pricing determined? What happens after someone calls, books, or requests a quote?

Put those answers in readable page text, not only in images, sliders, downloads, or social posts. Give each important service its own descriptive URL. Use one main heading, logical subheadings, and link text that describes where the link goes. The W3C’s guidance on structured content explains why this organization helps people navigate and understand a page.

Usable

A site should work on an ordinary phone, with a keyboard, and without unnecessary motion. Use sufficient color contrast, useful image descriptions, visible form labels, and error messages that tell people how to fix a problem.

Speed matters too. Resize images, remove unused plugins and scripts, avoid unnecessary autoplay video, and reserve image space so the layout does not jump. Google’s Core Web Vitals measure loading speed, responsiveness, and visual stability.

Understandable

Keep essential content in the page’s HTML when possible. Maintain an XML sitemap and check that public pages are not accidentally blocked by robots.txt or noindex. Google’s SEO Starter Guide recommends readable organization, descriptive URLs, useful headings, and accessible page resources.

Set AI crawler access intentionally. OpenAI documents separate controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, so a business can allow search visibility without making the same choice for model training.

An llms.txt file is an optional, experimental way to describe a site for tools that choose to use it. Do not rely on it for AI visibility. Clear page text, a working sitemap, accurate structured data, and deliberate crawler settings remain more useful basics.

Accurate

Structured data must match what visitors can see. Google’s structured-data guidelines warn against hidden information, fake reviews, and irrelevant markup. Never invent ratings, prices, credentials, availability, or service areas.

Regularly check contact details, hours, services, forms, booking links, indexed pages, and old offers. Start with the page customers use most, apply the four-part check, and improve the rest in priority order.
